Discussion: Is BDSM undermining feminism?

Domination, submission, possession, slave, pet, love … I freely admit that I love to read erotica/BDSM stories and I haven’t found one yet that took things too far. But what exactly is too far? Is that a Master telling his sub or slave what to wear, how to sit, not to talk, how to crawl or present properly? Or do you draw the line when a Master tells his sub to crawl on all fours and eat out of a dish on the floor? All fine with me as long as the plot fits the characters and it’s consensual. But I’m seeing a lot of reviews for some of my favorite books that say things like this:

“u know what, I don’t understand that kind of relationship, and I keep thinking that’s not love. a man/woman who tell you how to act,to dress, to think… seriously? 50 and more years for obtain little credit as women and then what? we are at the same point..” – Goodreads reviewer

*sigh* I’m all for asserting yourself as a woman, standing up for your rights, feeling empowered, etc. But not every woman feels “degraded” or set back a hundred years. Why do some people still insist on reading those kinds of things if their moral compass won’t allow them to be open-minded to what others like or dislike? Stop shoving the feminist pamphlet down my throat.

Sierra Cartwright, author of With This Collar (you can read my review here) was recently featured in an article in the Daily Mail – Mail Online. Here are some of the comments that were left:

“I’m not sure how much that woman in India (the one being beaten with sticks) would appreciate being given a copy of this book?”

Someone actually had the gall to compare BDSM with an act of violence against women.

“I find it appalling that some women find stuff like this ‘sexy.’ It took several decades to get across the message that it’s NOT okay to abuse and dominate women, and now they want to undo it.”

Here we go again. The choice of some women to go after what they want sexually, even if we don’t understand it, is once again going to be used as an excuse for the unequal treatment of women.

Per definition, fem·i·nism is:

1: the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes

2: organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests

It doesn’t say anything about sexual equality. That is a personal choice, not one that affects other women. If someone is going to bring up the point that men will now look at women differently because of the overnight popularity of 50SoG and books alike, then it is up to them to set these men straight on where their boundaries are. People will assume or perceive what they want to until you project what you wish them to see.
